We will not meet this week due to the Memorial Day holiday.  Have a safe and happy weekend.

It was College Day!  With college attire on-hand, we welcomed our own Jessica Vess to provide an update on Rowan Crosby Scholars.  Now in its 11th year, the local non-profit continues to assist middle- and high school students in exploring their options for higher education upon graduation from high school. So far, 9,300 students have participated in the program, with 1,418 graduates. 42% are first generation students.  In addition to assisting with making good choices, the program has provided over one million dollars in financial assistance and scholarships.

In addition to sharing information on Crosby Scholars, Jess gave us an interactive quiz on college mascots.  Those members scoring highest were Daren Fuller, Tyler Haines, Cory Kluttz and Richard Miller.

Guests included Crosby Scholars staff Don Jones, Cindy Livengood and Melissa Waller; as well as Susan Baker's Mom, Linda Duncan, and Jamie Javurek's son.

Membership Secretary Tom McElveen conducted a new member induction for Susan Baker, Valire Copeland and Tyler Haines.  Photo to follow. Welcome to Kiwanis!

David Foote won the chance to draw the Joker in the 50/50 Drawing, but chose the 6 of Clubs.  The pot is now at $177.00.

Rick Eldridge gave the report, noting Club College Trivia.  He shared that 90% of Salisbury Kiwanis Club members have college degrees.  36% have advanced degrees. Members have degrees from almost 50 different institutions of higher learning, not to mention affiliations with colleges of spouses, children, and other family members.  We have 9 members with degrees from Catawba College; 7 from UNC-Chapel Hill; 5 from NC State and 4 from Appalachian State.

Shari Evans has a birthday on May 21.  Allison Doby has one on May 26.  Tom & Patty McElveen had an anniversary on May 20.  Jess & Jeremy Vess have one on May 24.

Congratulations to Amy Vestal on the birth of her daughter, Pressley, last week. Holly Teeter was recognized for recently graduating from Leadership Rowan.

Our next meeting on Friday, May 31 will feature a program by Dr. Elizabeth Mitchem with the Exceptional Children's Department of Rowan-Salisbury Schools.

Our program for Friday, June 7 is still being planned.  We will not meet on Friday, June 14 due to our Family Summer Picnic on Saturday, June 15 at the Rowan Shrine Club, 6480 Long Ferry Road.  The event will be from 11-2 with food provided by The Hot Dog Shack.  Plan to bring family members and lawn chairs.  Register on the phone app or through the website.  Costs are covered through your dues.
