OUR MEETING THIS WEEK

There will NOT be a Friday noon club meeting this week as we will all be at the Hurley Y preparing for our annual Pancake Festival.  We need everyone to come and participate in this event that raises our funds to help local children's charities.  Set-up begins at 9:00am Friday in the Y gym.  If you have a yard sign, remember to put it out now - just be sure to keep it out of the right-of-ways or it may be removed by the City.

Bring any unsold tickets to the Festival and give to Rick Eldridge so they can be sold at the door.  He will also collect any ticket money and donations you have at that time as well.

OUR MEETING LAST WEEK

Pilot Driving a Plane

Our own Dick Franklin and Jamie Javurek presented a program on the Mid-Carolina Flight School that they founded at our local airport. The school has one double-engine and two single-engine planes to provide training for those individuals seeking a private pilot's basic certificate.  To obtain a license one must pass medical screenings, pass both an oral and written exam, and have at least 40 hours flying time.  The school charges an average of $200 an hour for flight time.  It also offers first-time "Discovery Flights" for $100 to allow persons to gauge possible interest in learning to fly.   Jamie explained that there is a current commercial pilot shortage which is expected to worsen in the future.  He and Dick are encouraging young adults to consider pursuing a career in aviation.

Dick and Jamie were accompanied by one of their trainers, Josh Vanderelst.  Susan Duncan Baker was back as a declared membership candidate.

Ron Bowers won the door prize.  Susan Baker won the chance to draw the Joker in the 50/50 drawing, but chose a  2 of Diamonds instead. The pot has now grown to $1,451.00.  Dick & Jamie provided four complimentary "Discovery Flight" certificates which were drawn for as well.  Winners were Jim Duncan, Daren Fuller, Judy Foote and Erik Lipscomb.

Oatmeal cookies ordered by members in memory of Mike McDuffie were distributed by Ann Eidson.

HEALTH & HAPPINESS

Erik Lipscomb had a birthday March 3.  Jim Duncan had one March 10.  Daren Fuller has one on March 14.  Erica & Aaron Church have a wedding anniversary on March 13.

OTHER NEWS

In order to promote attendance by more young people at the Pancake Festival, we are providing free "Student Tickets" this year.  In the past we have allowed young children to attend free; but want to extend that this year to any student K - College.  These Student Tickets will be available at the door for any student to use.

We welcome participation at the Festival by our sponsored Key Club members at Carson, East Rowan, North Rowan and Salisbury High.  We couldn't do it without them!  We also appreciate the support of the Catawba College Football Team in helping to set up and tear down the grills and other equipment used at the Festival.  Thanks also to several Crosby Scholar kids and the Y staff who assist in preparations.

As a new member of the Rowan County Planning Board, Tim Norris is asking members to complete a short Survey Monkey survey about the Rowan County Land Use Plan.  You can access the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RowanCoLandUsePlan   Please complete by the end of March.  Also, feel free to share the link and encourage others to provide input.
